03 High Adventure
A Walter & Eleanor Swashbuckling Tale
Walter and Eleanor Gresham have faced impossible things before.
They have never faced anything quite this much fun.
When Walter, Eleanor, and their irrepressible young companion Sekmet approach a mysterious house outside Palestine, Texas, they expect another encounter with the inexplicable. Instead, they find themselves aboard Endeavour—transformed into an aeroship sailing through a fantastic realm of floating islands, impossible storms, sky-going monsters, and larger-than-life adventurers.
Walter is suddenly “Little John.” Eleanor discovers she rather enjoys being “Maid Marian.” Sekmet has somehow become the spirit of the ship. And Captain Roderick Vale and his Merry Men are exactly the sort of cheerful lunatics who consider flying directly into an aetherstorm a perfectly reasonable plan.
At the heart of that storm waits Jin Tao, the self-proclaimed Lord of the Nine Winds, an ancient artifact he believes he has mastered, and a fortress where gravity is more suggestion than law.
To get home, Walter and Eleanor must survive a kraken, storm a castle in the sky, and unravel the secret of the mysterious Sphere of Worlds. What they discover may be far more important than escaping this particular adventure—for hidden inside Jin Tao’s fortress is the first real clue to understanding the impossible forces that brought them there.
High Adventure is a fast-moving steampunk novelette filled with aerial battles, swashbuckling swordplay, wuxia-inspired action, impossible worlds, Victorian heroes, and the sort of adventure where boarding a castle makes perfect sense—provided no one has thought of it before.
